Why reasoning matters

A return can be correct and still be unconsidered.

The software will accept almost anything you type into it. It does not ask why. Most of what changes an owner’s tax position happens before the form exists — compensation, basis, timing, structure. By the time a return is being typed, the year is closed and the decisions are already made.

So the useful question is not whether the return was filed correctly. It is whether anyone reasoned about it.

Every line has a margin

01 Officer compensation

Wages to the owner who works in the business

Is the salary defensible for this role, these hours and this industry, if someone asks?

Reasonable compensation

02 Shareholder basis

Carried forward, year over year

Has basis been tracked every year, or reconstructed in the year it finally mattered?

Stock and debt basis

03 Distributions

Cash taken out that is not payroll

Does basis support what was actually taken out, checked before the year closed and not after?

Distributions in excess of basis

04 Reimbursed expenses

Home office, mileage, equipment

Is there an accountable plan behind these, with the documentation it requires?

Accountable plan

None of this appears on the form. All of it decides what goes on it. One CPA prepares the entity return and the owner’s return — the same conversation.

Services

And the reasoning underneath them.

One CPA prepares all three, which is the point: the entity return and the owner’s return are the same conversation.

Form 1120-S

S corporation tax

The return, and the positions underneath it that decide what the return says — for closely held businesses and private practices.

  • Reasonable compensation
  • Stock and debt basis, tracked yearly
  • Distributions against basis
  • Shareholder K-1s

Form 1065

Partnership tax

Allocations that follow the agreement, and capital accounts that survive being read.

  • Special allocations
  • Capital account maintenance
  • Guaranteed payments
  • Partner K-1s

Form 1040

Individual tax

Where the entity work lands. Owners are not a separate engagement from their businesses.

  • Flow-through from K-1s
  • Multi-state residency and sourcing
  • Estimated payments
  • Year-round planning

How we work

What working together actually looks like.

01

A call, before anything else

No intake form standing in for a conversation. We establish whether this is a fit before either of us commits.

02

A written engagement and a fixed scope

What is included, what is not, and what it costs — in writing, before work starts.

03

Documents through a secure portal

Not email attachments. A checklist you can see the state of, at any hour. Portal access is for current clients after engagement.

04

Preparation, review, and the questions

The questions come back to you before the return is finished, not after — reasonable comp, basis, distributions, accountable plans.

05

Filing, then the next twelve months

Filing is the start of the next year’s planning, which is the only time planning can still change anything.

06

Ready when you are

Start with a call, or request a Clarity Review of your recent returns — a clear on-ramp before you commit.

When you need more than the return

Everything starts at the CPA firm.

Work that falls outside a CPA engagement routes to a company built for it, rather than being stretched to fit. PizzelloCPA remains the front door for tax preparation, research, and planning.

FAQ

Questions owners usually ask

Who is PizzelloCPA built for?
Closely held businesses and private practices — therapists, dentists, optometrists, veterinarians, and similar licensed practices — plus the owners’ individual returns. Open to closely held businesses generally. One CPA conversation across the entity return and the 1040.
What is the Clarity Review?
A confidential offer for prospective clients. Share your last one to two years of tax returns; Andrew reviews them and walks through opportunities and planning conversation points. It is an analysis discussion — not a guaranteed savings percentage.
How is this different from software-accepted tax prep?
The software will accept almost anything typed into it. It does not ask why. Useful tax work happens before the form exists — compensation, basis, timing, structure. Returns here are reasoned: reasonable compensation, basis tracking, distributions, and accountable plans — not just software-accepted filings.
Do you work year-round, and where?
Yes — year-round, not seasonal. Remote practice serving clients in all 50 states. The firm is based in Greenville, North Carolina.
What credentials does Andrew hold?

How do Bookkeepz and SmallBizCFO relate to the CPA firm?
PizzelloCPA is the front door for CPA tax preparation, research, and planning.
